India Coal Production: India has created a new record during April 2023 in the field of coal production. According to the Ministry of Coal, India has produced 73.02 million tonnes (MT) of coal during April 2022 as compared to 67.20 million tonnes, a growth of 8.67 per cent. Giving information in this regard, the Ministry of Coal said that Coal India Limited (CIL) has recorded a production of 57.57 million tonnes in April 2023, while 53.47 million tonnes of coal came out in April 2022, showing an increase of 7.67 percent. .

The Ministry of Coal has paved the way for release of additional coal in the market by optimally utilizing the mining capacities of the coal blocks under its control and that is why the production of coal in April 2023 against the 8.41 million tonnes produced in April 2022 Production has increased by 17.52 percent to 9.88 million tonnes (provisional figure).
More than 11 percent increase in total coal dispatch
The Ministry of Coal says that total coal dispatch has registered a growth of 11.76 per cent during April 2022 from 71.99 million tonnes to 80.45 million tonnes in April 2023. This has been mainly due to the initiatives taken by the Ministry of Coal in terms of enhancing rail connectivity infrastructure to all major mines under PM Gati Shakti with a view to ensure faster evacuation.
Government’s effort to reduce dependence on imported coal
Ministry of Coal has offered 103 coal and lignite blocks for auction under the 7th round of auction with the aim of increasing the availability of coal and 29 agreements have been signed for the mines which were auctioned in the 6th round. According to the ministry, the total PRC of 29 coal mines is 74 million tonnes per annum. As a result of the initiative taken by the government with the aim of increasing domestic production, the country’s dependence on imported coal will be reduced and this will also save a lot of foreign exchange.
