India-Australia match at Chepauk, the first ODI was played here in 1987; India got an interesting defeat

Now here the last and decisive match of the three-match ODI series between India and Australia is to be played. The history of ODI cricket on this ground also started with the India-Australia match. The first ODI match was played here in October 1987. In this match, the Indian team had to face a thrilling defeat.

This match was part of the World Cup 1987. This World Cup was hosted jointly by India and Pakistan. Australia’s challenge was in front of the defending champion India in the third match of this World Cup. Here Indian captain Kapil Dev won the toss and chose to bowl first. Australia had made a strong start in this match but the Indian bowlers had stopped this team for 270 in the last.

Mitchell Marsh’s father scored a century
Mitchell Marsh’s father Geoff Marsh scored 110 runs for Australia in this match. He shared a century partnership for the first wicket with David Boon (49). After this, Dean Jones also scored 39 runs. On the basis of this strong performance of the top order, the Kangaroo team had scored a score of 270 runs losing 6 wickets in the stipulated 50 overs.

Indian team was heading towards easy victory
Chasing the target of 271 runs, India also got off to a great start. For the first wicket, Sunil Gavaskar and Srikkanth made a fast-paced partnership of 69 runs. The Indian team now needed 64 runs to win and had 7 wickets and enough balls left. But here back to back wickets started falling and when the Indian team needed two runs in two balls, India’s tenth wicket fell here in the form of Maninder Singh.
