According to statistics, the total length of national highways in the country till 2014-15 was 97,830 km, which has increased to 1,45,155 km in March 2023. In the year 2014-15, where 12.1 kilometers of road construction was being done daily, in 2021-22 the speed of road construction in the country has increased to 28.6 kilometers per day.

The Government of India has implemented several programs in the last nine years to increase the capacity of the National Highway infrastructure in the country. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the country’s largest expressway of 1,386 km, is being developed under the Bharatmala project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi Its Delhi-Dausa-Lalsot section has already been inaugurated.
New record is about to be made
Earlier recently there were reports that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has set an internal target of road construction during the current financial year. It is the effort of the government that during the current financial year, on an average, 45 kilometer long road should be constructed daily. If the road is built at this speed, then during April 2023 to March 2024, more than 16 thousand kilometers long roads will be ready in the country.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is failing to achieve the target of construction of roads for the last two consecutive financial years. Earlier, during the financial year 2020-21, the record of making roads at the fastest speed was established. During the financial year 2020-21, 13,298 km long roads were constructed. This means that 36.4 km of roads were constructed everyday during the period under review.
