Mother’s Day 2023: The day of Men’s Day or Mother’s Day is dedicated to the mother. Every year it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. This year Mother’s Day will be celebrated on 14 May 2023.
‘Mother’ is such a supernatural word, the very mention of which makes every pore of the body quiver and immense tides of emotions start rising in the heart. Every pain in the body ends as soon as the word ‘mother’ is pronounced.
‘Mother’ is a small word to say, but even then the glory of mother cannot be described in words. The universe is created from the blessed stream of the mother. Keeping in the womb for nine months, labor pain, breastfeeding, reciting lullabies and keeping away from all sorrows by hiding in Mamta’s lap. Only a mother can do all this. The glory of the mother is also found in our Vedas, Puranas, Philosophy, Smritis, Epics and Upanishads etc. In the Vedas, the mother has been considered the first to be worshipped.
According to the Shrimad Bhagwat Purana, the blessings received from the service of the mother not only in this birth but also removes the sufferings and sins of seven births. The emotional strength of a mother is like a protective shield for the children. In Shrimad Bhagwat, ‘mother’ has been called the first teacher of the child.
King Ballabh Nighantu has also compared the qualities of Haritaki with ‘Mother’ at one place in this way-
‘Yasya Mata Grihe Nasti, Tasya Mata Haritaki’
Meaning: Haritaki (Harad) is benevolent like the mother of humans.
In the Taitriya Upanishad, the glory of the mother has been described in this way-
,Matri Devo Bhava,
Meaning: Mother is paramount even than the gods.
,Mother’s birthplace, heaven’s poverty,
Meaning: Janani (mother) and Janmabhoomi (place of birth) are greater than heaven.
At one place in the manuscripts of Ramayana composed by Valmiki, Lord Shri Ram says to Laxman –
Laxman is interested in your golden Lanka.
Mother’s birthplace, heaven’s poverty.
Meaning: Laxman! Even though this Lanka is made of gold. But still I am not interested in it. Because mother and motherland are greater than heaven.
The glory of the mother has also been talked about in the Mahabharata. Once a Yaksha asks Yudhishthira, who is heavier than the land? Then answering this, Yudhishthira says-
,Mata Gurutara Bhumeru,
Meaning, mother is much heavier than this land.
Maharishi Vedvyas has also written describing the glory of the mother-
Nasti Matrisma Chhaya, Nasti matrisama gatiḥ.
nasti matrisam tran, Nasti Matrusma Priya.,
Meaning: There is no shadow like mother, there is no support like mother, there is no protector like mother and there is no dearer thing like mother.
