IND vs NZ ODI Series: The three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting on Friday is in the hands of Shikhar Dhawan. This is not the first time that he will captain Team India. Even before this, he has led the team on many occasions. Under his leadership, India has defeated Sri Lanka, South Africa and West Indies in ODI series. Now he has said some special things about his captaincy.

The left-handed batsman said that his decision-making ability has improved with time and now he does not hesitate to take such decisions which may not please a player but benefit the team.

‘Don’t care about anyone’s offense’
Dhawan has said in a conversation with Cricinfo, ‘The more you play, the more confident you are about your decisions. Earlier, there used to be occasions when I used to show respect to a bowler and give him the extra over, but now I have matured and even if someone feels bad, I will take the decision which will benefit the team.

‘Balancing is key’
Talking about the experience of captaincy, Dhawan said that it is important to maintain balance and win the trust of the players. He hardly feels the pressure and keeps his surroundings pleasant. Dhawan said, ‘When you play music on a stringed instrument, if the string is too loose, it will not sound good or if the string is too tight, it will break. Therefore it is linked to creating balance. It is important to create balance as a captain.

He said, ‘You should know when to tighten the string and when to leave it a little loose. It depends on the time. At this stage, I have also understood when, how to talk to the players and how much to talk. If a shot hits a bowler’s ball, it is important to know when to talk to him. I will not talk to him when it is hot in the atmosphere. Instead, I will talk to him easily later.

Dhawan said, ‘It also depends on the level at which you are captaining. If it is IPL then most of the players have matured, so you have to think whether to pull the strings or not. On some occasions in Ranji Trophy you have to show determination because at that level some players are like raw pitchers and you have to be determined to mold them. It is important to maintain balance.
