Cholesterol: Cholesterol is a type of fat that is produced by the liver. Our diet plays an important role in maintaining the cholesterol level. Diabetologist Dr. Somnath Gupta explains that due to increase in the level of bad cholesterol, plaque builds up in the blood vessels which reduces blood circulation and then causes damage by triggering heart or brain stroke. However, good cholesterol (HDL) helps in removing harmful cholesterol from the blood vessels. Bad cholesterol increases in our body due to poor diet and lifestyle. Due to increase in bad cholesterol in the body, many types of diseases can occur. When the level of bad cholesterol increases, there are many symptoms like shortness of breath, high BP, swelling in the legs, etc.

By doing regular exercise, HDL increases in the body and it reduces bad cholesterol.
Avoid smoking and alcohol

Avoid eating foods high in cholesterol and saturated and trans fats

To increase the level of good cholesterol in the body, Dr. Gupta told about some food items to be included in the diet. This includes nuts such as almonds and walnuts, citrus fruits, strawberries, grapes and apples, fiber-rich foods such as beans and pulses, soy and soy-based foods, fatty fish, kidney beans, barley and whole grains.
