Option to choose by date
The Ministry of Personnel has issued a fresh order regarding the old pension scheme. Accordingly, now some central employees can opt for the old pension scheme. Under this order, all the central employees who are eligible to take advantage of the old pension scheme, have been given time till August 31, 2023, to choose the new option.
Will not get a chance after the deadline
However, if the eligible employees do not opt for the old pension scheme before the expiry of the deadline, they will automatically be covered under the new pension scheme. This means that till August 31, 2023, whatever option the eligible Central Employees Pension Scheme chooses, it will be considered final. The ministry has also made it clear in the order that after the deadline i.e. 31 August 2023, there will be no facility to change the option of the pension scheme.
Such employees will get benefits
According to the government order, the benefit of this facility will be given to those central employees who were appointed before the notification of the new pension scheme National Pension System or the notification regarding the appointment of their post was already issued. The notification of the National Pension System was issued by the government on 22 December 2003. This means that all central employees who were reinstated or their reinstatement notification was issued before December 22, 2003, can opt for the old pension scheme.
Benefits of Old Pension Scheme
Let us tell you that the benefit of the old pension scheme was available under the Employees Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 1972, which is now known as the Employees Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021. Under this scheme, central employees retiring before the year 2004 get a fixed amount as pension. The amount of pension is determined on the basis of the salary at the time of retirement. If the pensioner dies after retirement, then in this situation his dependents get the benefit.

Due to this change of the central government, there is an atmosphere of happiness among the central employees. According to a PTI news, the pensioners’ organization National Movement for Old Pension Scheme has welcomed this change. This organization of more than 14 lakh retired people of central and state governments has called the change a good news. Along with this, the organization has also demanded to make some changes in the new pension scheme.
