Wheat Atta Price Hike: To curb the prices of wheat and flour, the government has sold 5.07 lakh tonnes of wheat in the open market in the third e-auction on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, under the Open Market Sale Scheme. The government has sold wheat at Rs 2172.08 per quintal. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has said that after selling wheat in e-auction, softening of prices is being seen in the market and the price has come down to 2200 per quintal.
Government claims reduced prices
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs said in its press release that for the first time in Uttar Pradesh, when wheat was sold under e-auction, the price was running at Rs 2950 per quintal, which has come down to Rs 2177 per quintal. That is, in just 22 days the price has come down by Rs 773 per quintal. The fourth auction will be held on March 1, 2023. To rein in wheat prices, the government had earlier decided to sell 30 lakh tonnes of wheat from its buffer stock in the open market. Which has now been increased to 50 lakh tonnes. Food Corporation of India i.e. FCI will now sell a total of 50 lakh tonnes of wheat in the open market from its stock under the Open Market Sale Scheme. There is also a motive of the government behind selling more wheat under the open market sale scheme. She doesn’t want the price to be high when the new marketing season starts. Otherwise, his purchase plan for welfare schemes may be affected.
Wheat-flour is expensive in the retail market
The government is claiming that the prices of wheat are coming down, but are consumers getting cheaper flour? According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, on February 23, 2023, the average price of wheat was Rs 33.09 per kg, while the price of flour was Rs 37.67 per kg. Whereas on July 1, 2022, wheat was available for Rs.30 per kg and flour for Rs.34 per kg. At the same time, flour is still available in the retail market at Rs.40 per kg. Packed branded flour is now available at Rs 42 to 45 per kg.
The process of buying wheat will start from March 15
The loss of wheat crop is being feared due to rising temperature. Although FCI Chairman Ashak M. Meena has said that the wheat production will be good, the government will buy 300 to 400 lakh tonnes of wheat in the 2023-24 marketing season. However, last year the government was able to buy only 187.92 lakh tonnes of wheat. Whereas in 2021-22, 433.44 lakh tonnes of wheat was purchased. The government estimates that 112.18 million wheat can be produced in the current Rabi season. FCI is the nodal agency of the government which procures wheat at the minimum support price for the public distribution system and welfare schemes of the government. From March 15, FCI will start wheat procurement for the new marketing season.
