NPS Money Withdrawal Rules: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in Shimla on Thursday that the money deposited in the National Pension Scheme (NPS) belongs to the person contributing to it and the state governments cannot take it under the law. According to sources, both the Congress-ruled states of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh have notified the re-implementation of the old pension system (OPS) for government employees. The Congress has promised to revive this system in Himachal Pradesh and it has become a major election issue in the state’s assembly elections. There are 1.75 lakh government employees in the state. Elections are to be held in Himachal Pradesh on 12 November 2022.

Speaking to media persons in Shimla, Minister Sitharaman said, “Under the law, the money deposited in the central head under NPS cannot go to the states. This will be found only for those employees who are contributing to it. Can we change the law? This is the employees’ money deposited with the Centre. This money will go only to the beneficiary employees and not with any one authority or entity. She said that I am not talking about politics here. I am only talking about the law.
Governments taking legal opinion
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel says that the Center has refused to return Rs 17,000 crore to the state government employees registered under NPS. He said that the Center cannot keep the money for long and the state government has sought legal opinion in this regard and can go to court.
