Wellington Test Day 2: The last and deciding match of the two-match Test series between England and New Zealand (ENG vs NZ) is being played in Wellington. By the end of the second day’s play here, the England team has made a strong hold on the match. After winning the first match, the English team, which is leading 1-0 in the series, seems certain to win the second match as well.
On the second day of the match, England started playing ahead of their yesterday’s (24 February) score of 315/3. Here only 8 runs were added to the score that Harry Brook (186) became the victim of Matt Henry. Here Joe Root stayed at one end with his century innings and wickets kept falling from the other end. Ben Stokes (27), Ben Fox (0), Stuart Broad, Olly Robinson (18) supported Root for a while and returned to the pavilion. Here England declared their innings for 435 runs losing 8 wickets. Joe Root returned unbeaten after scoring 153 runs. Matt Henry (4 wickets) was the most successful bowler among Kiwi bowlers.
Excellent bowling by Anderson and Jack Leach
In front of this huge score of England, the New Zealand team faltered from the beginning. English fast bowler James Anderson scattered the top order of the Kiwi team. He took three wickets back to back. New Zealand had lost its three wickets for 21 runs only. After this, spinner Jack Leach rocked and took the next three wickets. The Kiwi team had lost its 6 wickets for 96 runs. Here Stuart Broad gave the seventh blow to the Kiwi team. He returned the pavilion to Michael Bracewell (6).
For New Zealand, opener Tom Latham (35), Henry Nicholls (30) and Daryl Mitchell (13) lost their wickets while crossing the double figure. Other four wickets could not touch double digits. At the moment, at the end of the second day’s play, Tom Blundell (25) and Tim Southee (23) have returned to the unbeaten pavilion. New Zealand’s score is 138/7. Please tell that due to rain, like the first day, the entire overs could not be bowled on the second day as well.
Risk of follow on Kiwi team
The England team is currently ahead by 297 runs on the basis of the first innings. If the English bowlers continue to perform like this on the third day of the match and the Kiwi team returns to the pavilion soon, then Ben Stokes can follow up on New Zealand. England can easily win this match even in the midst of continuous rain-interrupted play.
