National Milk Day 2022: The birthday of Dr. Verghese Kurien, the father of the White Revolution in India, falls on 26 November. This day is celebrated as National Milk Day. Dr. Verghese Kurien played a very important role in increasing milk production in India to a record level. He was born in the year 1921 in Kozhikode, Kerala. The National Dairy Development Association had decided to celebrate Verghese Kurien’s birthday as National Milk Day from the year 2014.Dr. Verghese Kurien started ‘Operation Flood’ in India.
Due to his special operation, India emerged as the largest country in terms of milk production in the world. Dairy development of India got a new flight through this program. One of the largest milk producing companies in the country, Amir was founded by Dr. Verghese Kurien. He took his bachelor’s degree from Loyla College, Chennai. After this, he obtained an engineering degree from GC Engineering College, Chennai. Thereafter he took up dairy work in Cooperative Milk Producers Union Limited (KDCMPUL) in Kaira district of Gujarat. He took over this post at the behest of Tribhuvan Das. This dairy was established by Vallabhbhai Patel. This dairy started growing rapidly only after taking over his post. After this, in view of the increasing demand for milk, a milk plant was set up in this dairy. Later, Dr. Kurien named this dairy as Amul. A time came when this brand became recognized in every household of India.

In the year 1965, Operation Flood was started in India under the chairmanship of Dr. Verghese Kurien. After the success of Amul, in the year 1965, the then Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri made Dr. Kurien the chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). Due to the efforts of Dr. Kurien, white revolution started in India. After this it was named ‘Operation Flood’. In the year 1998, India became the world’s largest producer of milk leaving America behind. In the year 2010-11, India produces 17 percent of the total milk of the whole world. Dr. Kurien worked to connect 700 villages and cities across the country with this milk revolution.

Resigned from his post in the year 2006
Dr. Kurien remained the President of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited from 1973 to 2006. Dr. Verghese Kurien resigned from Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in the year 2006 after bringing milk revolution in India. In the year 2012, Dr. Verghese Kurien died at the age of 90.
