Denmark Open 2022: Srikanth enters second round, defeats Hong Kong’s Long Angus

Kidambi Srikanth Denmark Open 2022: Former World Championship runner-up Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the second round of the Denmark Open badminton tournament by defeating Hong-Kong’s Ng Ka Long Angus at the Jiske Bank Arena on Tuesday. Srikanth made a strong comeback after losing the first game to beat the 28-year-old Hong-Kong rival 17-21, 21-15, 21-12 in a 56-minute bout in the men’s singles section of the BWF World Tour Super 750.

Ranked 11th in the BWF rankings, Srikanth will next take on seventh seed Loh Keon Yew of Singapore. Loh Keon Yu is the same player to whom he lost in the final of the 2021 BWF World Championships in Huelva, Spain. The winner of that match will advance to the quarter finals.

Loh Keon Yew defeated Thailand’s Sithikom Thammasin 21-13, 22-20 in 42 minutes. Meanwhile, other prominent Indian shuttlers Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy and Saina Nehwal will start their campaign on Wednesday.

World No. 8 Lakshya Sen is the highest-ranked Indian and will open his campaign in the first round against world No. 6 and Olympic medalist Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia. HS Prannoy will have to overcome the challenge of Zhao Jun Peng of China to go to the second round. Prannoy and Lakshya Sen will face each other in the second round if they win their respective first round matches.

In women’s singles, lone Indian representative Saina Nehwal will face China’s No. 30 Zhang Yi Man. Commonwealth Games men’s doubles gold-medallist Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will also open their campaign on Wednesday when they take on South Korea’s Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae.
