When Deepak Hooda came out to bat, India’s score was 77/4 in 10.3 overs. Captain Hardik Pandya also could not support Hooda for long. With the dismissal of Hardik Pandya, India’s score became 101/5 in 15 overs. At the same time, Hooda hit two consecutive sixes on the balls of Mahesh Thikshana. After this, Wanindu Hasaranga also made the mistake of bowling a short ball to Hooda and played it well over deep mid-wicket for another six. Hooda shared an important unbeaten 68-run partnership for the sixth wicket with all-rounder Akshar Patel. Akshar Patel played an unbeaten inning of 31 runs.

Hooda said, “Initially, the conditions did not allow to hit the ball hard, but it was Thikshana’s last over and then he also bowled a loose ball. In a T20 match, you have to have the intent to hit. You have to smash when the ball comes into your zone. I think, it was the right time to play my game and my partner Akshar and thankfully it was executed well.”

Hooda also remarked that he had clarity in his mind to get India out of a difficult situation against Sri Lanka. He said, “It was very clear that after losing the early wicket, we had to build a partnership. When you are batting at number six down the order, you have to be ready for such situations. A crisis can come at any time. After a situation like that, we were in a good position quickly.”

Hooda further said, “The match demands that you play according to the wicket and get a good total. While batting as a number six batsman, I was thinking that I have to work as a finisher.”
