United States President Donald Trump said on Sunday that his legal team seeks the recusal of federal judge Tanya Chutkan, who is assigned to the case pertaining to the charges pressed against him for trying to reverse his 2020 election loss. Trump also sought a change in venue outside of Washington. In a social media post, Trump said, “THERE IS NO WAY I CAN GET A FAIR TRIAL WITH THE JUDGE ‘ASSIGNED’”. However, no formal request was filed with the court as of midday on Sunday, as reported by news agency Reuters.

Last week, Trump was charged over his alleged efforts to overturn his defeat in the 2020 US election. The former US President was accused of conspiracy to defraud the US, tampering with a witness, and conspiracy against the rights of the citizens.

Tanya Chutkan on Saturday gave Trump until 5 pm on Monday to respond. Trump’s attorney then asked for three more days to prepare for their response but, Judge Chutkan immediately denied their request. She added that she will determine whether a hearing is even needed after reviewing Trump’s response or not.

Under the process which is known as ‘Discovery,’ prosecutors must provide defendants with the evidence that exists against them so that they could then form their arguments of defence accordingly. On Sunday, Trump’s lawyer John Lauro, in television interviews defended the actions of the former US President in the case and criticised the protective order.
