श्वेते वृषे समारूधा श्वेताम्बर्धरा शुचिः।
Mahagauri Shubham Dadyan Mahadev Pramodaya ॥

In the upper left hand, the mother is holding a damru and in the lower hand there is groom’s posture. The whole posture of the mother is very calm. The worship mantra of Maa Mahagauri is-

‘Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Gauri Rupen Sansthita. Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah: ॥

Story of Maa Mahagauri

According to the legend of Maa Mahagauri, the eighth power of Maa Durga, Maa did austere penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. During penance, the mother remained foodless for thousands of years, due to which her body turned black. When Lord Shiva was pleased with the harsh penance of the mother, he accepted the mother as his wife and washed her body with the holy water of the Ganges and made her extremely radiant, due to which her black color became like fair complexion. After this, this form of Mother Parvati was known as Mahagauri.
