Japan along with Russia has increased its purchase of gas in the last one year. However, Japan has argued to other allied countries including America that they should consider this trade as an exception, because it is necessary for them to buy oil from Russian. Japan is buying crude oil from Russia at a time when many European countries have reduced their dependence on Russian fuel. Japan buying oil with Russia shows that joining the grouping with the big and powerful countries of the world does not mean that it should compromise with the personal interests of the citizens of its country. And under this strategy, Japan is the only country among G7 countries which is supporting Ukraine from outside but is not supplying any kind of lethal weapons. Japan stands with the rest of the western countries along with America and to show this, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited Ukraine in the past and discussed the affected areas with Zelensky.
Why G7 countries are unhappy with Japan
In May, G7 countries imposed several sanctions on Russia one after the other and Japan being the world’s third largest economy is the most influential member country of this group. In such a situation, if Japan continues to import oil with Russia, then a wrong message will be sent to the whole world regarding the sanctions imposed by the G7 countries on Russia and a big question mark will also arise on the commitment of the imposed ban. Japan is working with Russia as a major player in Sakhalin. Due to which the G7 countries have imposed sanctions on Russia, it cannot ignore the interests of Japan and following the rules of the sanctions, it cannot withdraw itself from Sakhalin. Along with this, Japan also knows very well that apart from Middle East, Qatar, America, Sakhalin is the only place which can meet the needs of Japan and this guarantees energy security to Japan. Japan understands very well that the way geopolitics is changing rapidly, if there is any change in relations with Gulf countries, then Sakhalin will be the last option which will help its fast growing economy.
