Crucial Hearing on Electoral Bonds Scheme to Commence at Supreme Court

A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court is set to commence a significant hearing from Tuesday, addressing a batch of pleas challenging the validity of the electoral bonds scheme, which is employed for funding political parties. The electoral bonds scheme was introduced by the government on January 2, 2018, as an alternative to cash donations made to political parties, with the goal of enhancing transparency in political funding.

The scheme allows any citizen of India or entity incorporated or established in India to purchase electoral bonds. These bonds can be acquired individually or jointly with other individuals.

The bench, consisting of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, J B Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, will consider four pleas, including those filed by Congress leader Jaya Thakur and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

PM Modi to Participate in ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ Culmination Event

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part in the culmination of the ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ campaign, an homage to those who have made the supreme sacrifice for the country. Additionally, he will inaugurate ‘Amrit Vatika’ and ‘Amrit Mahotsav Memorial’ to mark Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary. The event, held on the Kartavya Path, will also signify the closure of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and the launch of the ‘Mera Yuva Bharat’ (MY Bharat) platform for the country’s youth.

Prime Minister Modi will address the thousands of individuals who spearheaded the Amrit Kalash Yatras in various parts of the nation. The ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ campaign celebrates the brave individuals who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

In the spirit of people’s participation, the campaign featured numerous activities and ceremonies held across the country. These activities included the construction of memorials, the planting of indigenous species, the development of ‘Amrit Vatika,’ and ceremonies honoring freedom fighters and the families of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

The campaign proved to be a resounding success, with over 2.3 lakh memorials built across 36 states/Union Territories, nearly 4 crore ‘Panch Pran’ pledge selfies uploaded, 2 lakh plus ‘Veeron ka Vandan’ (tribute to the brave) programs nationwide, over 2.36 crore indigenous saplings planted, and 2.63 lakh Amrit Vatikas created.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s Visit to Portugal and Italy

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is embarking on a four-day visit to Portugal and Italy starting Tuesday, with the aim of strengthening India’s bilateral relations with these two key European nations.

During the initial leg of the trip, Jaishankar will visit Portugal on October 31 and November 1. He is scheduled to engage in discussions with his counterpart, Foreign Minister Joao Gomes Cravinho, covering a wide range of bilateral relations and regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest. The minister is also expected to meet the Portuguese leadership, members of the Portugal-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, and the Indian community in Portugal.

From Portugal, Jaishankar will proceed to Italy. In Italy, he will meet Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, the Minister of Defence, and the Minister for ‘Made in Italy.’ Additionally, he is expected to engage with the top leadership of the country. The visit signifies India’s commitment to strengthening ties with these European nations.
