Maratha Quota Protests Set To Intensify In Maharashtra, Hunger Strike In Villages From Today

Amidst growing demands for Maratha reservation, activist Manoj Jarange has intensified his efforts by announcing a series of hunger strike protests across Maharashtra. Jarange, who has been observing an indefinite fast in support of the Maratha quota demand, has issued a stern ultimatum to the state government. He declared that if the government fails to grant the reservation immediately, a wave of hunger strikes will commence in every village in the state from Sunday.

Addressing the media in Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district, Jarange underscored the gravity of the situation, warning that the government would be held accountable if any harm befalls the protesters engaged in the hunger strike protests, news agency PTI reported.

The activist has embarked on the fourth day of his hunger strike, firmly standing his ground. His refusal to be examined by doctors, following visits from Jalna district collector Shri Krishna Panchal and superintendent of police Shailesh Balkawade to check on his health, emphasizes the determination behind the Maratha quota movement.

Manoj Jarange initiated the second phase of his hunger strike on October 25, a day after the ultimatum given to the state government demanding the announcement of the Maratha quota in jobs and education under the OBC category had expired.

In his statement, Jarange emphasised the need for the government to take this movement seriously and not underestimate the determination of the agitating Maratha community. As the hunger strikes unfold in villages across Maharashtra, the movement is set to gain momentum in the coming days.

CPI(M) Announces Protest Over India’s Abstention on Gaza Resolution

India’s abstention from voting on a United Nations resolution calling for a truce in Gaza garnered outrage and condemnation from the CPI(M) and the CPI, who accuse the country of aligning its foreign policy with the interests of US imperialism.

In a joint statement, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India voiced their strong disapproval of India’s decision, denouncing it as a betrayal of the nation’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause, PTI reported. The statement, titled ‘Stop this Genocidal Aggression in Gaza,’ was issued by CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI General Secretary D Raja.

The Left parties contend that this move reflects India’s status as a subordinate ally of US imperialism and underscores the Modi government’s efforts to consolidate the US-Israel-India alliance, thereby negating India’s historic support for the Palestinian cause, PTI reported.

As the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the resolution, Israel escalated its air and ground attacks in the Gaza Strip, intensifying the crisis in the region. To express their solidarity with Palestine, the CPI(M) has announced plans for a protest to be held on Sunday at its AKG Bhawan office, PTI reported.
