In the previous financial year 2021-22, the consumption of electricity was 1,374.02 billion units.

According to the power supply data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the maximum power supply in a day increased to 207.23 GW in the last financial year from 200.53 GW in 2021-22. Experts believe that in the current financial year 2023-24, there will be a lot of improvement in electricity consumption and demand. The Ministry of Power has estimated the peak demand for electricity to reach 229 GW this summer.

The ministry has already given instructions to run imported coal based plants at full capacity. Apart from this, the ministry has asked domestic coal-based plants to import coal for blending to meet the huge demand for power in summer. Experts say that the increase in electricity consumption clearly shows that economic activities are improving in the country. He said that if there was no rain in the country in March, the increase in power consumption in the last financial year would have been in double digits.

Electricity consumption from April 2022 to February 2023 stood at 1,377.43 billion units, which is more than 1,374.02 billion units recorded in the entire financial year 2021-22. Analysts believe that the growth in electricity consumption in 2023-24 could be more than double digits i.e. 10 percent.
