According to TOI, Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) say that the medical bill for drug consumers in the country is going to increase. At present the Indian pharma industry is facing high raw material prices. The pharma industry has to bear more than 100 per cent of the cost of procuring the raw material required for essential medicines in the country. Although before this Corona Pandemic, these prices used to be low.
India dependent on China for medicines
There is a lot of boom in the use of antibiotics in the country. Even after improving the supply chain and logistics, rising raw material prices have added to the woes of the pharma industry. The prices of key antibiotics including azithromycin and amoxicillin imported from China have gone up. According to the report, these are also the products where India is completely dependent on China. In contrast, most of the drugs containing vitamins, including vitamins B and D, are imported from China.
Increased prices of these medicines
Paracetamol drug used for fever and pain, antibiotic meropenem was used extensively in the Corona epidemic. Also, API prices of some drugs like anti-diabetic metformin are seeing an increase of more than 200 per cent. India’s pharma has once again come into the limelight in the market. Since last 2-3 years API prices have increased due to lockdown in China.
