Wasim Akram Pakistan: Fast bowler Wasim Akram feels that Pakistan batting great Javed Miandad praised him in front of one of the chief selectors which led to his early entry into international cricket. Akram was an unknown club cricketer at the age of 18 when he was first spotted by Miandad at a trial in Lahore. Among 60 other local bowlers, Akram was given the chance to bowl to the then Pakistan captain Miandad, who was at the Gaddafi Stadium for a net session after recovering from injury.
Akram’s ability to swing the ball and pace caught the attention of Miandad and weeks later, he was given his international debut on Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand in 1985, marking the beginning of an illustrious international career.
Akram told Sen’s This Is Your Journey, I realized that when Javed saw me for the first time in Lahore, he recognized me. He praised me in front of one of the chief selectors. I thought something could happen if I concentrated.”
Akram took 502 wickets in 356 ODIs at an average of 23.52 and led Pakistan to victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup final against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He took 414 wickets in 104 Tests at an average of 23.62 and even captained Pakistan. Now after being praised by Miandad, Akram felt incredibly fortunate that he was spotted and given a chance by the great batsman. If things were not like this, he would not have come into cricket.
