His father Harbhajan Singh Banga has been a lieutenant general in the Indian Army. His family is originally from Jalandhar, Punjab. Banga got American citizenship in the year 2007. He has graduated in Economics from St. Stephen’s College. After this he completed his MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. He started his career in the year 1980 with Nestle India. He served as the CEO of Mastercard for more than 10 years. Along with this, he has also been involved in the board of many companies like American Red Cross, Kraft Food. He has also been the Vice Chairman of the private equity firm General Atlantic.

Government of India gave Padma Shri in the year 2016

The Government of India honored Ajay Banga with the Padma Shri in the year 2016 for his contribution in the financial sector. He will take over as the President of the World Bank on June 2, 2023.
