Babar Azam T20 World Cup 2022: Pakistan captain Babar Azam on Sunday defended the batting strategy of losing to England in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Left-arm pacer Sam Curran (3/12) and leg-spinner Adil Rashid (2/22) made brilliant spells as Babar and his fellow Pakistani batsmen were restricted to 137/8 in their 20 overs in the first innings. Thereafter, an unbeaten half-century from Ben Stokes (52 not out in 49) helped England win the T20 World Cup with a five-wicket victory.

The Pakistan captain said, “I am very sad. I think we were 20 runs short and we could not defend because of that. We are very proud to play for Pakistan. When you don’t win, then a lot. It hurts. I’m disappointed.” He said, “We were in a different position. We were trying to build a partnership, but we couldn’t. Whenever a wicket falls, the batsman goes and he plays two-three balls. We are the batting unit. As he had come on the back foot.”

Babar and his opening partner Mohammad Rizwan have come under criticism several times in recent times for being slow to score during the powerplay, often scoring relatively slowly compared to other top nations and then losing ground in the second half of the innings. Let’s try to set the platform to score fast runs.

The same happened in the final too, with Babar scoring 32 out of 28 and Rizwan scoring 15 out of 14. But the captain says that the strategy was not wrong. Babar said, “It depends on the situation. I think he got three out in the first six overs and we got only two out. It depends on the situation and the circumstances, what is demanded of you and after that you plan.” Every team has its own plan and we stick to our plan.”

Sometimes we are not able to give 100 percent on it. We try not to repeat our mistakes. But it’s a part of the game. Sometimes you do well and sometimes you don’t. This is the beauty of cricket. Every day is different.” With the openers often the dominant force in Pakistan’s T20 batting effort, the middle order has struggled to make an impression at times over the years. Masood’s 28-ball 38 and Shadab’s 20 Fast innings of runs, players had limited contribution in the final.

Asked if he was disappointed with the middle order, the skipper replied, “As a team, we win. As a team, we lose. The way we started, we can set the innings right.” Couldn’t finish the way. In the 11th over, it was 80-85, I think we should have finished on 150. We made a few mistakes.”

With the next T20 World Cup to be held in the Caribbean and the United States in two years’ time, there is an opportunity for teams to make changes after this year’s tournament and build on the next 24-month cycle. But Babar says Pakistan will now turn its attention to the upcoming Test series against England and New Zealand before taking any personnel decisions in the shorter form of the game.
