Chandrayaan-3 was successfully entered into lunar orbit on August 5, 2023. The Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru commanded a retro-burning at the perilune, following which the lunar orbit insertion of Chandrayaan-3 took place.
The perilune is the point in the lunar orbit at which the spacecraft is closest to the Moon. At perilune, Chandrayaan-3 performed a manoeuvre that allowed it to inject itself into the lunar orbit, or achieve lunar orbit injection.
MOX helped Chandrayaan-3 perform the retro-burning, which means that the spacecraft burnt in a direction opposite to the way it was fired in order to push it forward.
“MOX, ISTRAC, this is Chandrayaan-3. I am feeling lunar gravity 🌖,” ISRO said in a mission update.
The next important operation is the reduction of orbit. Chandrayaan-3 will perform this operation on August 6, 2023, at around 11:00 pm IST.
