This time Chaturmas will start on Thursday, June 29, 2023, on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi and it will end on Thursday, November 23, 2023, on Devuthani Ekadashi. As soon as Chaturmas begins, auspicious and auspicious works are banned. But this time is considered very auspicious for worship, fasting, meditation and pilgrimage.
Importance of pilgrimage in Chaturmas
According to Panchang, the time of Devotthan or Devuthani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month from Devshayani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month is called Chaturmas. Pilgrimage done in these four months is considered very virtuous. But definitely go to Braj city of Lord Krishna in Chaturmas. There is a belief behind this that all the holy places of the earth reside here in Chaturmas.
Brijdham, the city of Krishna is the pilgrimage of pilgrimages.
According to Shrigarg Samhita, during Chaturmas, all the pilgrims of the earth come to Brajdham and reside. That’s why this one pilgrimage done in Chaturmas gives the same result as visiting all the pilgrimages. According to the legend associated with the visit of Brajdham in Chaturmas, once Brahmaji is in sleep, a demon named Shankhasura steals all his Vedas and hides in the ocean with the Vedas.
Then in order to protect the Vedas, Lord Vishnu takes the form of a fish and goes inside the sea to fight with Shankhasur and kill him and hand over all the four Vedas to Brahma ji in Prayagraj. All these incidents will happen in Prayagraj. That’s why Lord Vishnu declares this place as the king of all pilgrimages.
But after the passage of time, Prayagraj becomes proud of being its Tirtharaj, that he is the best among all Tirthas. In the joy of being a pilgrimage, once Prayagraj organizes a feast for all the pilgrimages and also sends invitations to all. But Brajdham does not come in this feast. When Brajdham does not come, Prayagraj considers it as an insult. Then Prayagraj along with all the pilgrimages attack Brajdham. But Brajdham wins in the war.
After the defeat, Prayagraj reaches Vishnu ji with all the pilgrimages. Then Vishnuji tells everyone that, even though Prayagraj may be a pilgrimage, Lord Vishnu himself resides in Brajdham. That’s why Prayagraj was never the king of Brajdham and can never be. Lord Vishnu also says that due to Sri Hari being the abode of Vishnu, those who attacked Brajdham always had to face defeat.
After this, all the pilgrimages including Prayagraj seek forgiveness from Lord Vishnu and ask for the solution to get rid of this sin. Then Vishnuji orders other pilgrims including Prayagraj to reside in Brajdham every year from Ekadashi of Ashadh Shukla Paksha to Kartik Shukla Paksha Ekadashi i.e. in Chaturmas. This is the reason that during the period of Chaturmas, all the pilgrimages including Prayagraj reside in Brajdham. That’s why by visiting Brajdham in Chaturmas one gets the benefit of visiting all the pilgrimages.
