A day after former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s arrest sparked nationwide protests, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief will today appear in a special court at the police headquarters in the capital city of Islamabad to answer graft charges as his supporters called for protest. A Red alert has also been sounded in the capital after the implementation of Section 144, Rangers and armed forces will be deployed at important buildings and areas.
Pakistan on Tuesday suspended mobile internet across the country as violent protests erupted across several cities following the dramatic arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan outside the Islamabad High Court. Furthermore, Netblocks, an organization that tracks internet outages, said access to Twitter, Facebook and Youtube was restricted across Pakistan, a report in Dawn said.
Khan, who traveled from Lahore to the federal capital Islamabad, was undergoing a biometric process at the Islamabad High Court when the paramilitary Rangers broke open the glass window and arrested him after beating lawyers and Khan’s security staff.
The arrest of the 70-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman comes a day after the powerful army accused him of leveling baseless allegations against a senior officer of the spy agency ISI.
As the news of his arrest by the Rangers spread, massive protests broke out in several cities across Pakistan. Protesters at several places turned violent and burnt police vehicles and damaged public property.
Reports said at least four people were killed and over a dozen injured in different parts of the country in violent clashes between the security forces and the supporters of Khan.
“At least four PTI workers were killed so far in different parts of the country on the firing of the law enforcement agencies. One each has been killed in Lahore, Faisalabad, Quetta, and Swat,” senior PTI leader Shireen Mazari said.
