Air Travel In India: The increasing crowd at the airport is an indication that there has been tremendous growth in the aviation industry of the country. Now the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the body of the aviation sector, said that the Indian aviation industry has reached the pre-Corona era and it is going to be one of the largest aviation markets in the world. According to the report, domestic travel in terms of revenue passenger kilometer in February 2023 lagged just 2.2 percent behind touching the level of the pre-corona era. In the aviation industry, revenue passenger kilometer (RPK) is a measure of demand for air transport.
According to IATA, the demand for increasing air travel reflects the increase in business activity in the country. Reaching the pre-corona phase of air travel means that India has recovered from the hindrances caused by the corona epidemic. Apart from revenue passenger kilometers, the domestic aviation market is also measured through passenger load factor. According to the IATA report, in terms of passenger load factor, India is ahead of countries like America, China and Japan.
India’s domestic aviation market has been doing exceptionally well for the last four months in terms of passenger load factor. Passenger load factor has been 87.9 percent in November 2022, 88.9 percent in December, 85.2 percent in January 2023 and 81.6 percent in February.
According to the report, 3.5 to 4 crore people travel by air every year. According to the World Bank, there were 16.8 crore air passengers in pre-Corona India, out of which many were passengers traveling many times. But in the coming days, there is a possibility of a sharp jump in the number of air passengers.
According to ICRA, passenger air traffic in India is expected to grow at the rate of 8 to 13 percent. Passenger traffic in 2022-23 has been 13.60 crores, which is less than 14.15 crores in the pre-corona era of 2019-20. In 2021-22, 8.52 crore air passengers had flown. By 2029-30, 35 crore domestic air passengers and 16 crore international air passengers are expected to fly in India.
