Ujjwala scheme: A petition was filed in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday challenging the constitutional validity of a scheme that provides ‘cashback’ of Rs 200 on every LPG cylinder only to Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries and below poverty line (BPL) beneficiaries. Not applicable to other families living under BPL).
The petition came up for hearing before a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramaniam Prasad, which posted the application for further hearing on February 13 along with a similar petition. PMUY was launched on May 1, 2016 to provide cooking gas cylinders to BPL families without depositing money to the gas agency.
What is the demand for Ujjwala Yojana
It has been demanded in the petition that such BPL families should be identified which do not come under the Ujjwala scheme. The petitioner has also sought the intervention of the court to give him the benefit of the ‘cashback’ scheme. Advocate and petitioner Akash Goyal has challenged the provision of the Ujjwala scheme under which Rs 200 per LPG cylinder up to 12 cylinders in a financial year is transferred only to the bank accounts of beneficiaries of the scheme and not to all BPL families. Huh.
Gas subsidy is available on 12 cylinders
In May 2022, the government had announced a subsidy of Rs 200 on a gas cylinder per year (up to 12 cylinders) for the beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme so that the gas prices could be reduced for them.
Oil prices rise due to Russia-Ukraine war
Challenging the constitutional validity of the ‘cashback’ scheme, the petition said that all poor people are facing financial difficulties due to the rise in crude oil prices globally due to the Russia-Ukraine war. In such a situation, everyone should get the benefit of this cashback.
