R Ashwin on Rohit Sharma: The last match of the three-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka will be played in Thiruvananthapuram today. Team India is leading 2-0 in this series. At the same time, veteran Indian spinner R Ashwin has questioned a decision of team captain Rohit Sharma in the first ODI of this series.
In the last over of the first ODI, Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka was close to a century (98) when he was dismissed by fast bowler Mohammed Shami through Mankading at the non-striker’s end. Although Indian captain Rohit Sharma had withdrawn this appeal, after which Shanaka was able to score a century in this match. Rohit’s decision was appreciated a lot in the cricket world, but now teammate Ashwin has questioned Rohit’s decision.
Ashwin raised questions on Rohit’s decision
Ashwin said that when Shanaka was on 98, Shami was run out at the non-striker’s end and he appealed. Rohit withdrew this appeal. After this many people tweeted about it. I am just repeating the same thing guys. The position of the game is immaterial. It is a valid way to get out if you appeal for LBW or caught then no one will ask the captain like Sarath Kumar or Amitabh Bachchan in Kaun Banega Crorepati whether he is confident with the appeal or not’.
Ashwin further said that ‘if a bowler appeals, he should be given out and it ends here. If the fielder also appeals, then it is the duty of the umpire to declare a player out when he is out.
