JEE-MAINS Eligibility: The top 20 percentile students of each education board will now be eligible to take the JEE-Advanced exam, even if they have not scored 75 percentile in class 12th. Sources in the Union Ministry of Education gave this information. The decision comes in the backdrop of persistent demands to relax the eligibility criteria for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)-Advanced for students seeking admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). To appear in JEE-Advanced, at least 75 per cent marks in aggregate are required in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective education board.
Top 20 percentile students will be eligible to take JEE-Advanced exam
A source said, “The 20 percentile criteria will help candidates who have scored less than 75 percentile in aggregate in class 12 board exams. Many of the top 20 percentile candidates score 75 percentile or less than 350 marks in various state boards. The ministry has decided that if a student is in the top 20 percentile, he/she is eligible for JEE Advanced.” Online registration for the first edition of JEE-Main will end on January 12. The exam will be conducted from January 24 to 31.
Rule of 75 percent marks was implemented in December
The rule of 75 percent marks has again been implemented for the candidates appearing for the Joint Entrance Examination for Engineering (JEE Main Exam). If the candidate has less than 75 percent marks in 12th, then he will not get a place in the merit list. This rule is for general category students while reserved category candidates will have to score at least 65 percent marks only then they will get a place in merit. This rule was applicable earlier also for JEE Main exam but in the last two years this rule was relaxed due to Kovid. In the last two years, even if the candidate does not get 74 percent marks in 12th and gets selected in JEE Main, then it was considered eligible for admission. Even if the candidate is selected in JEE Main, but after the declaration of the board result, his marks are less than 75 percent, then he will not get a place in the merit list. However, now the top 20 percentile students of every education board will now be eligible to take the JEE-Advanced exam, even if they have not scored 75 percentile in class 12th or not.
