Twitter Accounts Banned: Elon Musk-run Twitter banned 45,589 accounts promoting child sexual abuse and pornography in India between October 26 and November 25. At the same time, the micro-blogging platform also blocked 3,035 accounts promoting terrorism on its platform in the country. Overall, Twitter banned 48,624 accounts in India during the reporting period. Twitter’s effort behind banning these social media accounts is to prevent the spread of any kind of fake and sentimental posts.

In its monthly report on compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021, Twitter said that it received 755 complaints from users in India in the same time frame and took action on 121 URLs. These include complaints received from individual users as well as court orders. Most complaints from India were about abuse/harassment (681), IP-related violations (35), hateful conduct (20), and privacy violations (15). In its new report, Twitter said it also took action on 22 complaints appealing account suspensions.

All these have been resolved and appropriate response has been sent, the company said. We have not revoked the suspension of any of these accounts after reviewing the specifics of the situation. All accounts are closed. We also received 1 request regarding general questions about Twitter accounts during this reporting period, the company said. Under the new IT Rules 2021, large digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users will have to publish a monthly compliance report.
