Government Sufficient Food Grain Stock: If you are taking advantage of the welfare schemes related to the Food Safety Law of the Central Government, then great news is coming for you. To meet the needs of these schemes in the country, the government has sufficient food grains stock. On behalf of the government, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has informed about this on Saturday.

There is enough stock in the country

According to media reports, the Food Ministry said that it is constantly monitoring the prices of essential food items, so that rapid response can be given if needed. Adequate stock of food grains is available in the central pool with the Government of India to meet the requirements of National Food Security Act (NFSA) and other welfare schemes and for additional allocation in Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY).

159 lakh tonnes of wheat and 104 lakh tonnes of rice in stock

About 159 lakh tonnes of wheat and 104 lakh tonnes of rice will be available in the country till January 1, 2023, which is much more than the buffer standards. Under the buffer norms, there was only a need to keep 138 lakh tonnes of wheat and 76 lakh tonnes of rice on January 1. But till December 15, about 180 lakh tonnes of wheat and 111 lakh tonnes of rice were available in the central food grain pool. The ministry said that the stock position of wheat and rice under the central pool has always been well above the buffer norms.

It may be known that on October 1, 2022, about 227 lakh tonnes of wheat and 205 lakh tonnes of rice were available in the central pool. While on October 1, only 205 lakh tonnes of wheat and 103 lakh tonnes of rice were required to be under the buffer norm. The ministry said that apart from farmers selling wheat in the open market at prices higher than the minimum support price (MSP), procurement of wheat in the previous season was also reduced due to low production. Sufficient stock of wheat will be available in the central pool to meet the country’s requirement till the next wheat crop arrives.
