Liquor sale and consumption has been increasing continuously in India during the last few years. During the last financial year, the people of India have created a new record in this matter. These figures have been revealed in a recent report by the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC), an organization of the alcohol industry.

last year’s sales figures

According to CIABC data, in the financial year 2022-23, foreign liquor made in India ie IMFL increased by 14 percent in terms of sales volume to reach 385 million cases. A box contains 9 liters of liquor. In this way, during the last financial year, Indians bought about 350 crore liters of liquor. This is the highest ever sale in a single financial year. This figure is about 12 percent more than before the Kovid epidemic i.e. in the financial year 2019-20.

Sales of expensive liquor are increasing

CIABC figures show that the highest sales during the last financial year were in the premium category. Liquor costing more than Rs 1000 per 750 ml is kept in this category. As per the data, the sale of liquor in this premium segment grew by 48 per cent during the last financial year. At the same time, the share of the category of less than Rs 500-1000 per 750 ml has come down to 20 percent. Cheap liquor is still on top in terms of share. In terms of volume, their share in total sales has been around 79 percent.

Sales can be this much this year

CIABC believes that this trend of boom in liquor sales may continue in the current financial year as well. CIABC expects eight per cent growth in liquor sales in the current financial year. In this way, the total sale of liquor in 2023-24 can reach around 42 crore cases. This means that about 380 crore liters of liquor can be sold in 2023-24. This liquor is selling the most. It was said in the report that whiskey is the top liquor sold in India. It has a 63 percent stake in the total sale of liquor. After several years of continuous decline, the last financial year also saw a boom in the sale of gin.

most of the southern states

Talking about the regions, the western states saw the highest sales growth of 32 per cent during the last financial year. Similarly, an increase of 22 per cent was recorded in eastern states, 16 per cent in northern states and 9 per cent in southern states. However, the contribution of southern states to the total sales is still the highest. They are currently contributing 58 per cent to the total sales. At the same time, the contribution of western and eastern regions is 22-22 percent, while the northern states are contributing 16 percent. Punjab has been at the forefront of growth among states, registering a growth of 54 per cent in sales in the last financial year.
