Satellite tuner will be installed in television only

Preparations are now being made by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to install built-in satellite tuners in television. This means that if you already have this thing in your television then you will not need to buy free dish or set-top box apart from TV. More than 200 channels can be viewed on one click of the remote.

yet to be decided

The minister made it clear that a decision is yet to be taken in this matter. In December last year, Thakur had written to Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav to issue instructions to television manufacturers to adopt the standards issued by the Bureau of Industrial Standards for satellite tuners.

how will this system work

Television sets with a ‘built-in satellite tuner’ will enable access to free-to-air television and radio channel facilities by mounting a small antenna at a suitable location such as the roof or wall of a house. At present people need set top box and dish to avail more channels. The free-to-air channel will continue to be broadcast using digital satellite transmission.

The number of households with Doordarshan free dish has more than doubled since 2015. According to a KPMG report, in 2015, the number of Doordarshan Free Dish users was estimated at two crore. In the year 2021, this number had increased to 4.3 crores.
