The recent mass shooting in US’ Nashville, which claimed the lives of 6 people including three children and three adults, has taken the overall mass shooting toll in the country to 129 in 2023 and is the 13th incident of gun violence in a school this year .

The attacker was heavily armed with at least two assault rifles and a handgun and came with a manifesto and school maps, detailing surveillance and entry-exits points and was prepared for a confrontation with law enforcement, said the police.

Reacting to the incident, President Joe Biden described the latest shooting as “sick” who has already called for Congress to reinstate a national ban on assault rifles.

“It’s ripping our communities apart, ripping the soul of this nation,” Biden said following the Nashville shooting.

As per a report by DailyMail, California, Texas and Florida reported 12 mass shootings each this year, while Louisiana witnessed 11, and Illinois suffered eight incidents of gun violence.

With 12 people killed, including the shooter, California’s Monterey Park saw the worst mass shooting this year.

Eight people were killed during a shooting on January 4 in Cedar City, Utah, with Michael Haight killing his wife, their five children and his mother-in-law before turning the gun on himself.

There are about 120 guns for every 100 Americans, according to the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey.

Here is a list of schools that suffered mass shootings this year.

  1. Oak Park High School, Michigan: A student suffered a gunshot after a school basketball game on January 6.
  2. Wekiva High School, Florida: The same day on January 6, another shooting incident happened in California’s Wekiva High School where a teenager was shot at and injured in a parking lot.
  3. Richneck Elementary School, Virginia: A six-year-old boy targeted his teacher who was left injured in a classroom. This incident also took place on January 6.
  4. Del City High School, Oklahoma: On January 17, one person was shot at and injured just after a school basketball game had concluded.
  5. Washington Technology Magnet School, Minnesota: A cross fight between two groups of teenagers left a female school staff member with graze injury on January 20.
  6. Starts Right Here, Iowa: Two students were killed and an adult male was injured during a gun violence at this school on January 23.
  7. Walter P. Carter Elementary/Middle School, Maryland: On February 15, a 15-year-old girl was injured outside the school where an after-school activity was taking place.
  8. Palo Duro High School, Texas: A stray bullet from an incident near the school campus injured a student on March 6.
  9. Thomas Carr Howe High School, Indianapolis: One man was shot dead during a basketball game during the shooting that took place on March 7.
  10. Lamar High School, Texas: On March 20, a student was killed while another was injured in a shooting outside the school building.
  11. Thomas Jefferson High School, Texas: A student was left injured in the school parking lot on March 21.
  12. West High School, Colorado: A shooting on March 22 left two school administrators injured.
  13. The Covenant School, Tennessee: Three children and three adults were shot dead during a shooting inside the school on March 27. A police officer suffered a hand injury from cut glass.
